The 3D Pinball: Space Cadet game became very familiar to most of us thanks to Microsoft, who included the game with all Windows licensed packages, starting with Windows 95 to Windows NT, Me, 2000 and most recently Windows XP.
The pinball game came built-in with these packages, for free, together with the Solitaire cards game and other entertainment accessories. The well known 3D Pinball: Space Cadet PC video game is some kind of a 3-D graphics virtual version of the old, mechanical pinball machine, with some extra features.
The game has 3 “tables”, called the Space Cadet, Skulduggery and Dragon’s Keep. Each of these tables show a specific image and a few displays on its side, showing the player’s score, the ball number and another display for various types of information.
In the Space Cadet table, the player is the member of a space fleet that completes missions to increase their rank. There are 9 possible ranks to attain, from lowest to highest: Cadet, Ensign, Lieutenant, Captain, Lieutenant Commander, Commander, Commodore, Admiral and the highest, Fleet Admiral. The player is accepting a mission by hitting one of the mission targets, which selects which mission they take, and by going up the launch ramp.
Each of the missions contains an already set number of things to do, like hitting the attack bumpers (the 4 bumpers at the top of the table) 8 times (this is known as the “target practice mission”). A mission ends when its goal is met, or when all the “fuel lamps” under the launch ramp are turned off. The fuel lights turn off after a certain amount of time, and they turn back on when the ball rolls over them, or when the ball is going up the launch ramp again.
The Skulduggery table is presented as a treasure hunt, where the player must find Reg Leg’s loot. The player can attain this goal either by piecing together a treasure map, or by activating and completing a series of several mini-games on the table, called modes. The modes are like the missions of the previous table. There are modes like ship battle, tavern fight, escape Bermuda Triangle, mutiny and sword fight.
The third table, called the Dragon’s Keep table, features a fantasy environment, where the player must get through various quests, leading to the slaying of a dragon. The player can acquire awards such as weapons, spells and armors.
The 3-D Pinball: Space Cadet game was not included to the latest versions of Windows packages, such as Windows Vista and Windows 7. Still, for those who love to play it and want to add it to their PC’s, on Vista or Windows 7, there is still a chance to get the 3D Pinball: Space Cadet game for download, from the web.
