Free puzzle game – 40 Stories

The world of indie games is filled with new titles which are most of the times a great reminder of how games and gaming used to be in my view. With intriguing storylines and mesmerizing characters, most indie titles aren’t afraid to bring innovation to an otherwise stagnant industry. One of these indie developers is Chico State Game Studios.

Chico State Game Studios is a student powered development team which was the driving force behind this free adventure game, 40 Stories. The developer saw the light of day back in 2004 when students of the California State University decided to try and get into one of the most competitive industries out there while helping each other to improve in fields which weren’t covered by their regular curriculum.

40 Stories is a totally free to play, free to own puzzle game. The point of the game is to create duplicates of yourself in order to escape the 40 levels within the game. The main character is a technical support employee, Anita Hent and her dedicated goal in life is to escape her office. Darius McDoogle is in a way the evil mastermind driving the game as he is the one which gives Anita her ability to create clones of herself because of the Quantum  Stabilizer which shot her. The puzzles are quite challenging at times and it’s great to see that such titles are still popping out in this day and age while a truly funny story is powering your advancements through the game.

The latest version of the game, version 1.2 that is, brings a series of improvements to the title which did improve game play a lot in my view. For example the resolution can now be adjusted easily, but there still is a bug or two hiding within the game, one of which is mentioned even on the developers page in which the user interface gets off-centered when the game is not run in at 1024 x 768 pixels. There have been modifications added to certain levels but all in all, the game feels a touch better put together.

40 Stories is played with a camera stuck somewhere floating above the rooms in which you find yourself at any given time, but the graphics does look gorgeous thanks to the unreal engine powering the title. System requirements are modest in this day and age as the title will only require a dual core processor, 2 GB of RAM and a video card with 256 MB of RAM and shader model 3.

In case you were on the lookout for a free adventure/ puzzle title, here you have it. Get the game HERE!
